2025 Networks Underway
On the 20th of March, we celebated the first Network meetings with over 90 participants from across the Kāhui Ako attending. Everyone walked away with new learning and links with colleagues from other schools.
As one of our final Kāhui activities for 2024 we were privileged be able to present the Te Kāhui Ako Kātote Kura of the Year Award to Tracey and her wonderful team at Ōurhia Model School.
For a small kura they have really stepped up this year with a full presence at all Kāhui networks and group events. Additionally, they have fully supported all the student activities - Maths Art, Winter Lights, Music Festival, NYLD, and Kapahaka.

This morning (21st November 2024) 17 amazing tamariki from across Te Kāhui Ako Kātote bravely stood up and participated in the video "You Are Enough". The script, carefully developed between the Year 7&8 Young Leaders, ASL's, and Stacey Olwyn (a poetry slam artist), was performed alongside the talented directors from Te Kura Tuarua o Kaiapoi.
Watch this space for the release of the video, on the 6th December 2025.
This morning, a group of dedicated Kātote young leaders came together to sort presents and wrap Christmas boxes for local families in need. Their efforts are part of Te Kāhui Ako Kātote’s partnership with The North Canterbury Christmas Project, an initiative aimed at bringing joy and support to the community this festive season.
Through teamwork and generosity, these young leaders are making a meaningful difference, ensuring that families in North Canterbury experience the magic of Christmas.
Last night, on the 20th of November, we proudly concluded a year dedicated to advancing digital wellbeing across Te Kāhui Ako Kātote.
Throughout the year, students from across the Kāhui Ako have actively participated in engaging workshops, where they explored the importance of balanced and safe digital practices. Digital ambassadors have been established, empowering students to lead by example and foster a positive online culture within their schools.
In addition, a series of insightful parent workshops, including student voice from our high school Peer Support/Digital Ambassadors, have equipped families with tools and strategies to navigate the digital world confidently and collaboratively with their tamariki.
This year’s efforts have strengthened connections across our community, fostering a shared commitment to digital wellbeing. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed to making this initiative a success!
On Tuesday 12th November we were fortunate to have Melanie talk to us about her mahi on Māori ākonga achieving success as Māori. She spoke about her book ‘Niho Taniwha’ and the model she uses to implement her strategy to support student success. The use of whai, ako, mau and tipu within the niho taniwha structure help to embed these principles. Each of the chapters includes a short kōrero that helps us engage with the kaupapa. The use of checklists enables educators to look at our own practice and identify how we can improve to become better practitioners for our ākonga Māori.
It was great to see many of her pukapuka being sold and looking in to the future we hope to see her Niho Taniwha model become embedded in our kura.
You can find her book available here:
Niho Taniwha workshop is available next in Ōtautahi on 13th February 2025 click on the link to enrol
On Thursday 31st October, Jonathan delivered his winning speech to our young leaders. What an inspiration he is to our ākonga! He spoke with immense pride of his connection to his Samoan heritage and of bringing the youth of Aotearoa together regardless of their background. Having delivered his speech to a number of audiences now, Jonathan was able to refine it to suit the young audience in front of him.
A huge mihi to Jonathan for giving up his precious time as his final year at kura comes to a close.
It was awesome seeing so many of our Kura performing at the North Canterbury school kapa haka festival, Kā Matakura o Ruataniwha Kapa Haka Celebration.

On Tuesday 20th August, Kathryn Berkett presented to 64 teachers from Te Kāhui Ako Kātote in a one-day workshop where she covered topics including coping with Trauma and Resilience.
After school she delivered a keynote to all staff across the Kāhui Ako, reminding us to look after ourselves. "It is impossible for a dysregulated adult to calm a dysregulated child!" In fact a dysregulated adult will dysregulate children.
"Kathryn is an incredible story teller who delivers important messages in interesting ways"
Kathryn closed off the day by reminding us that "We are not that important" - in other words, it is OK to do your email tomorrow, to go to the gym or see family. No one is going to die if we don't perfect that lesson plan now.
It was great to see such beautiful installations at the Kaiapoi Lights festival.
Congratulations to the students who performed at the Kaiapoi Lights and Matariki demonstrations.
"I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to you all for coming onboard with the Kaiapoi Matariki celebration and the time and effort from both yourselves and the tamariki at your kura creating the beautiful whetū installations. These were such a special feature at Kaiapoi Lights - We also are very appreciative of the Kapa Haka groups that braved the cold to perform at both Kaiapoi Lights and Matariki.
